For a point distribution \(X\) on the sphere \(\mathbb S^d\) the normalized Riesz s-energy is given by \[ E={1\over{|X|^2}}\sum_{x\neq y\in X}\|x-y\|^{-s} \] and its continuous analog by \[ \mathcal J=\int_{\mathbb S^d\times\mathbb S^d}\|x-y\|^{-s}\, d\sigma(x)\, d\sigma(y). \] It is shown that the difference between these quantities can asymptotically be estimated by the spherical cap discrepancy and a lower bound on the minimum distance of points in \(X\).
