Let \(L\) be a (fixed) line bundle on a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve of genus \(g\geq 2\) over an algebraically closed field \(k\) of arbitrary characteristic. Denote by \(M_{(r,=L)}\) the moduli stack of pairs \((E, \phi)\) where \(E\) is a vector bundle of rank \(r\) with determinant isomorphic to \(L\) and \(\phi : L \to \det E\) is an isomorphism. Let \(M_{r,L}\) be the moduli space of vector bundles of rank \(r\) with determinant isomorphic to \(L\). The substacks corresponding to semistable bundles will be denoted by \(M^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,=L)}\) and \(M^s_{(r,=L)}\) respectively. The author shows that the Picard group of the stack \(M_{(r,=L)}\) (and of \(M^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,=L)}\)) is freely generated by the determinant line bundle \(L_{\det}\) and \(\mathrm{Pic} M^s_{(r,=L)}\) is generated by (the restriction of) \(L_{\det}\). He deduces that the Picard group of \(M_{r,L}\) is isomorphic to \({\mathbb Z}\) and is generated by the theta line bundle \(L(\theta) \cong L_{\det}^{-r/h}, h\) being the greatest common divisor of \(r\) and degree of \(L\). He shows that the restriction of theta line bundle generates \(\mathrm{Pic} (M^s_{r,L})\). Local factoriality of \(M_{r,L}\) is also proved. These results on \(M_{r,L}\) and \(M^s_{r,L}\) were proved by \textit{J.-M. Drezet} and \textit{M. S. Narasimhan} in characteristic \(0\) [Invent. Math. 97, No. 1, 53--94 (1989; Zbl 0689.14012)].
