Krull monoids were introduced in the commutative case by \textit{L. G. Chouinard} II [Can. J. Math. 33, 1459-1468 (1981; Zbl 0453.13005)] and in the non-commutative case by \textit{P. Wauters} [Commun. Algebra 12, 1751-1765 (1984; Zbl 0545.16008)]. They are completely integrally closed monoids satisfying the ascending chain condition on divisorial two-sided ideals. The present paper deals with non-commutative Krull monoids and contains a detailed study of their properties and structure using the divisor theoretic approach. Examples are given to show the relation between Krull monoids and multiplicative semigroups of Krull rings. In particular it is shown (Prop. 5.1) that if \(H\) is the monoid of regular elements in a prime Goldie ring \(R\), then \(H\) is a Krull monoid if and only if \(R\) is a Krull ring. The last section is devoted to questions of factorization lengths in atomic Krull monoids. Bounded factorization monoids are characterized, and a sufficient condition is given for the structure theorem for sets of factorization lengths to hold in a Krull monoid (Th. 6.5).
