The authors study the time-asymptotic stability of solutions to the following abstract system of fractal hyperbolic-parabolic equations: \[ u_{tt}=-Au +\gamma A^\alpha \theta , \;\;\quad \theta_t =-\gamma A^\alpha u_t -k A^\beta\theta , \] \[ u(0)=u_0,\quad u_t(0)=v_0,\quad \theta (0)=\theta_0, \] where \(A\) is a self-adjoint, positive definite operator on a Hilbert space, \(0\leq\alpha ,\beta\leq 1\). In [\textit{F. Ammar-Khodja} et al., ESAIM, Control Optim. Calc. Var. 4, 577--593 (1999; Zbl 0941.74014)], the region of exponential stability in \((\alpha,\beta)\) has been analyzed and identified. In this paper the authors prove that the rest of the region can be classified as region of polynomial stability and region of instability, giving thus a complete stability analysis of solutions for \((\alpha ,\beta)\in [0,1]\times [0,1]\). Moreover, the optimality of the order of polynomial stability is established. The main ingredients in the proof are the semigroup theory related to the stability of semigroups and spectrum analysis.
