Let \(K\) be a knot in \(S^3\) and \(S^3_{p/q}(K)\) the \(3\)-manifold obtained by \(p/q\)-surgery on \(K\). There exists a \(3\)-manifold that can be obtained by surgeries on infinitely many distinct knots in \(S^3\). See [\textit{J. K. Osoinach jun.}, Topology 45, No. 4, 725--733 (2006; Zbl 1097.57018), \textit{M. Teragaito}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2007, No. 9, Article ID rnm028, 16 p. (2007; Zbl 1138.57012) and \textit{T. Abe} et al., ibid. 2015, No. 22, 11667--11693 (2015; Zbl 1331.57004)] for such examples. In the paper under review the author proves that for any fixed \(3\)-manifold \(Y\) there are at most finitely many alternating knots that can produce \(Y\) by Dehn surgery. This improves a recent result of \textit{M. Lackenby} and \textit{J. S. Purcell} [Geom. Topol. 20, No. 4, 2053--2078 (2016; Zbl 1378.57011)]. He also gives a lower bound on the genus of knots depending upon the \(3\)-manifold they produce by Dehn surgery. Using this genus bound, he puts some restrictions on Seifert fibered surgery. The proofs are based on an explicit formula for the \(+\) version of the Heegaard Floer homology of the results of Dehn surgery on a knot \(K\) in \(S^3\) in terms of homological data derived from a doubly filtered complex \(\mathrm{CFK}^{\infty}(K)\).
