    Let \(H\) be a finite-dimensional real Hilbert space with norm \(\|.\|\) and inner product \((\cdot,\cdot)\), let \(A\) be a positive symmetric linear operator on \(H\) satisfying \[ (Au,u)\geq\lambda\,\| u\|^2\;\forall u\in H\text{ and some }\lambda>0. \] Consider the nonlinear equation \[ (\| u'\|^lu')'+ \| A^{1/2}\,u\|^\beta\, Au+ g(u')= 0, \] where \(l\) and \(\beta\) are positive constants, a typical condition on \(g\) is \(g(w)\sim c\| w\|^\alpha w\). The authors establish a global existence and uniqueness result and study the asymptotic behavior as \(t\to\infty\). A basic role in the proof is played by the total energy \[ E(t):= {l+1\over l+2}\, \| u'(t)\|^{l+2}+ {1\over\beta+2}\,\| A^{1/2} u(t)\|^{\beta+2}. \]
