The paper deals with van der Waerden rings and their properties. A compact topological ring is called a van der Waerden ring if every homomorphism from this ring into another compact topological ring is continuous. The paper starts with a very thorough list of definitions of notions used in the paper. The definitions are followed by an extensive list of results about topological rings, mainly with proofs. Some of the main properties of van der Waerden rings, that are obtained in the paper, are the following ones: 1) any van der Waerden ring is totally disconnected; 2) the class of van der Waerden rings is closed under extensions; 3) every open subring of a van der Waerden ring is a van der Waerden ring; 4) the ring of square matrices with elements from a van der Waerden ring is a van der Waerden ring in the standard topology; 5) every van der Waerden ring is metrizable; 6) a compact ring with open radical is a van der Waerden ring if and only if the ring has the radical topology; 7) a compact ring with identity and open radical is a van der Waerden ring if and only if it is topologically finitely generated.
