For a negative discriminant \(-d\) and a 4-dimensional positive definite lattice \(L\), the average representation number \(r_{av}(L,d)\) is the average of all representations of binary lattices of determinant \(d\) by the lattice \(L\). Using the connection between quaternary lattices and orders in quaternion algebras, the primitive average representation number \(r^*_{av}(L,d)\) is related to the usual representation number of \(d\) by the trace 0 sublattice of \(L\). This is used to derive asymptotic formulas and lower bounds for the average of these coefficients in the degree 2 Siegel theta series of the lattice \(L\). As a corollary, the author obtains upper bounds for the Fourier coefficients of certain Siegel modular forms.
