    Let \(\omega\) be a Hermitian form on a complex compact \(n\)-dimensional manifold \(X\). A \(C^2\) function \(u\) on \(X\) is called \(\omega\)-\(m\)-subharmonic if the forms \[ (\omega + dd^c u)^k \wedge \omega ^{n-k} \] are positive for \(k=1,\dots, m\). The complex Hessian equation has the form \[ (\omega + dd^c u)^m \wedge \omega ^{n-m} =cf\omega ^n , \] where a smooth function \(f>0\) is given and we look for a constant \(c>0\) and an \(\omega\)-\(m\)-subharmonic function \(u\). The author proves that such a solution always exists. For Kähler manifolds the result is due to \textit{S. Dinew} and the reviewer [Am. J. Math. 139, No. 2, 403--415 (2017; Zbl 1372.32027)]. The proof uses a similar scheme, but estimates in the Hermitian case are more complicated. In particular the Hou-Ma-Wu \(C^2\) estimates [\textit{Z. Hou} et al., Math. Res. Lett. 17, No. 3, 547--561 (2010; Zbl 1225.32026)] are modified with the use of some ideas from [\textit{V. Tosatti} and \textit{B. Weinkove}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 755, 67--101 (2019; Zbl 1435.32052)]. The result was independently obtained by \textit{G. Szekélyhidi} [J. Differ. Geom. 109, No. 2, 337--378 (2018; Zbl 1409.53062)] for a family of Hessian-type equations.
