The paper under review confirms the long-standing local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for \(U(p, q)\) by showing that the discrete series \(D(\eta, t)\) of \(U(p-1, q)\) occurs (with multiplicity one) in the discrete series \(D(\chi, z)\) of \(U(p, q)\) if and only if the Harish-Chandra parameters \((\chi, z)\) and \((\eta, t)\) satisfy the Gan-Gross-Prasad interlacing relation. As described in Theorem 2, one main focus of the paper is the branching law of small \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\)-representations with non-zero cohomology which were classified by Vogan and Zuckerman in 1984. The author overcomes the difficulties by relating it to Howe's correspondence using results of Li, Paul and Trapa. The author of the paper under review introduces the notion of invariant tensor product and studies its various properties. This is an important technique of the current paper, and it could have further applications, say as those mentioned in Conjectures 2 and 3.
