Let \(p\in (1,\infty)\), with \(p\neq 2\), and \(q\in (2,\infty]\). The authors study the optimal Hölder exponent for the gradient of the solutions of the \(p\)-Laplace equation \[ \Delta_p u=h, \text{ in }\mathbb{R}^2, \] where \(h\in L^q(\mathbb{R}^2)\). In particular, in the case \(p>2\) and \(q\in (2,\infty)\), the authors prove that this exponent is \(\frac{1-\frac{2}{q}}{p-1}\). For \(p<2\) (resp. \(p>2\) ) and \(q=\infty\), it is shown that the gradient is Hölder continuous with any exponent less than 1 (resp. \(\frac{1}{p-1}\)). Finally, for \(p<2\) and \(q\in (2,\infty)\), the authors prove that the gradient is at least \((1-\frac{2}{q})\)-Hölder continuous. The proof is based on a universal gradient estimate for the solutions of the \(p\)-Laplacian equation in the plane which is derived from the quasiregularity of the complex gradient.
