Let \(X\) be a smooth projective variety and let \(a_X:X\rightarrow A_X\) denote the Albanese morphism. Zhi Jiang, one of the authors of the present article, proved in [\textit{Z. Jiang}, Commun. Contemp. Math. 13, No. 3, 509--532 (2011; Zbl 1311.14015)] that if \(p_g(X)=P_2(X)=1\), then \(a_X\) gives rise to an algebraic fiber space. On the other hand, if one only assumes that \(p_g(X)=1\), then the Albanese map is not necessarily surjective. In this paper the authors show that, if \(p_g(X)=1\) and \(a_X\) is not surjective, the image of \(a_X\) is closely related to the geometry of theta divisors. More precisely they prove the following: Let \(X\) be a compact Kähler manifold with \(p_g(X)=1\). Then \(a_X\) is not surjective if and only if there exists a quotient map of abelian varieties \(A_X\rightarrow B\) such that the image of the composed map \(f:X\rightarrow B\) is an ample divisor of \(B\). In a special case when \(A_X\) is simple they show that if \(a_X\) is not surjective and the Albanese image \(a_X(X)\) is smooth in codimension one, then the image is a theta divisor of \(A_X\) and \(a_X\) is a fibration over its image.
