An immersed submanifold \(M\) of an Euclidean space satisfies the \textit{Omori-Yau} maximum principle whenever for any function \(\phi: M\to\mathbb{R}\) bounded from above there exists a sequence \((x_n)\) of points of \(M\) for which \(\lim_{n\to\infty}\phi(x_n) = \sup\phi\), \(\|\nabla\phi (x_n)\| \leq 1/n\) and \(\Delta\phi (x_n)\leq 1/n\) for all \(n\in\mathbb{N}\). Here, the authors prove that if \(M\) is complete, minimal, satisfies the above maximum principle and has relative index of nullity greater than or equal to \(\dim M - 2\), then \(M\) is a cylinder over a minimal surface.
