Let \(f\) be a holomorphic or real analytic function defined in a neighbourhood of the origin in \(\mathbb C^n\) or \(\mathbb R^n\). The author studies basic properties of the critical integrability index \(c_0(f)\) of \(f\) at the origin which can be regarded as a measure of the order of vanishing of \(f\) at the origin. This integer invariant is well known in the asymptotic analysis of oscillatory integral operators (see, e.g., [\textit{A. N. Varchenko}, Funct. Anal. Appl. 10, 175--196 (1977; Zbl 0351.32011); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 10, No. 3, 13--38 (1976)]), in the theory of Fano manifolds (as the \(\alpha\)-invariant), in the minimal model program (as the log-canonical threshold), in statistics, and so on. The goal of the the author is to give an ``elementary'' proof of the result from [\textit{D. H. Phong} and \textit{J. Sturm}, Asian J. Math. 4, No. 1, 221--226 (2000; Zbl 0978.32004)], which asserts that the sets \(\{c_0(f) : f \in \mathcal O_{\mathbb C^2,0}\}\) and \(\{c_0(f) : f \in \mathcal O_{\mathbb R^2,0}\}\) satisfy the ascending chain condition. In fact, it is a particular case of the conjecture due to \textit{J.-P. Demailly} and \textit{J. Kollár} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 34, No. 4, 525--556 (2001; Zbl 0994.32021)], which was formulated for function germs \(f \in \mathcal O_{\mathbb C^n,0}\). The main idea of the author's approach is to use some relations between integrability indices and convex bodies together with results of \textit{A. N. Varchenko} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 10, 175--196 (1977; Zbl 0351.32011); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 10, No. 3, 13--38 (1976)].
