The paper is devoted to the study of the existence of homoclinic solutions to second-order Hamiltonian systems of the form \[ -\ddot{u}+A(t)u(t)=\chi {F_u}(t,u(t)), \] with nonzero solutions that vanish at infinity. Here \(\chi=\pm 1\). Under certain assumptions, the author proves that the above equation has a weak solution \(u\in{H^1}\) which decays at infinity exponentially fast. The proof depends on a careful analysis of the energy functional restricted to the generalized Nehari manifold, and on existence and refined properties of special Palais-Smale sequences.
