The numerical solution of partial differential equations usually depends fundamentally on a disretization of the ambient space of the PDE and its boundary. In many methods, these discretizations depend on gridded data points and collocation for example at these points, and often different methods of discretization at the boundary and inside are used. However, much better results may be achieved (and potentially even ones easier to compute, due to a reduced number of data points) if meshless methods (e.g. for collocation, or otherwise) are used. The author of this paper uses the highly successful approach of radial basis function approximation for this purpose. These radial basis function approximations admit a quickly convergent approximation to numerical solutions for PDEs or other problems, and here they are applied to nonlinear Schrödinger equations. He uses, among other things, a quadrature formula with radial basis functions. The space discretization is carried out with these meshless radial basis function approximations, and an Euler method is applied with respect to time. Both global error and truncation error are discussed, and several numerical examples are given in detail.
