The papers surveys various approaches which lead to the notion of conformal algebras. The basic tool is the language of mulitilinear operations from the reviewer's paper [Usp. Mat. Nauk 24, No. 1(145), 47-59 (1969; Zbl 0188.04901)] and from \textit{J. Lambek}'s paper [Category Theory Homology Theory Appl., Proc. Conf. Seattle Res. Center Battelle Mem. Inst. 1968, 1, 76-122 (1969; Zbl 0198.33701)] with modification which uses actions of a Hopf algebra \(H\). The other basic notion used in the paper is a topological algebra (shortly TC-algebra) with continuous derivations which is imbedded into the algebra \(F(A)\) of some special translation invariant continuous maps from \(H\) to \(A\). It is shown that the class of TC-algebras contains Weyl algebras. If a TC-algebra \(A\) belongs to a variety of algebras \(V\) then any conformal algebra \(C\subseteq F(A)\) is a \(V\)-algebra in a properly defined multicategory \(M^*(H)\).
