The authors study subspaces of frames (fusion frames), i.e., sequences \((w_i,W_i)_{i\in I}\) such that for some \(A, B> 0\), \[ A\| f\| ^2 \leq \sum_{i\in I} w_i^2 \| P_{W_i} f\| ^2 \leq B\| f\| ^2, \] for every \(f\) in the Hilbert space \(H\), where \(P_{W_i}\) is the orthogonal projection onto the closed subspace \(W_i\). They give sufficient conditions for \((w_i,T(E_i))_{i\in I}\) to be a frame of subspaces for some computable weights \(w_i\) when \(T\) is linear operator and \((E_i)_{i\in I}\) is an orthonormal basis of subspaces and this result is used to study the properties of equivalent frames of subspaces. The authors also study, among other things, refinements of frames of subspaces and the question for which sequences \((W_i)_{i\in I}\) one can find weights \(w_i\) so that \((w_i,W_i)_{i\in I}\) is a frame of subspaces. Finally a number of (counter)examples are given.
