Let \(\mathcal {R}\) be a ring. An additive map \(\delta :\mathcal {R}\to \mathcal {R}\) is said to be a Lie derivation if \(\delta ([a, b])=[\delta (a), b]+[a, \delta (b)]\) for any \(a, b\in \mathcal {R}\), where \([a, b]=ab-ba\) is the usual Lie product. There have been a number of works on characterization of Lie derivations on rings and operator algebras. For example, \textit{M. Brešar} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 335, No. 2, 525--546 (1993; Zbl 0791.16028)] showed that, if \(\mathcal {R}\) is a prime ring and does not satisfy \(S_4\), then every Lie derivation of \(\mathcal {R}\) can be decomposed as \(\sigma +\tau \), where \(\sigma \) is a derivation from \(\mathcal {R}\) into its central closure and \(\tau \) is an additive mapping of \(\mathcal {R}\) into its extended centroid sending commutators into zero. In the paper under review, the authors aim to characterize nonlinear Lie derivations on von Neumann algebras. Recall that a nonlinear Lie derivation \(\delta : \mathcal {A}\to \mathcal {A}\) is a mapping from an algebra \(\mathcal {A}\) into itself satisfying \(\delta ([A, B])=[\delta (A), B]+[A, \delta (B)]\) for all \(A, B\in \mathcal {A}\). Note that no additivity of \(\delta \) is assumed. They prove that, if \(\mathcal {A}\) is a von Neumann algebra with no central summands of type \(I_{1}\), then \(\delta \) is of the form \(\sigma +\tau \), where \(\sigma \) is an additive derivation of \(\mathcal {A}\) and \(\tau \) is a mapping of \(\mathcal {A}\) into its center \(\mathcal {Z}_{\mathcal {A}}\) which maps commutators into zero.
