For a fixed monomial term ordering \(\tau\) on a polynomial ring \(R\) and a fixed monomial ideal \(I_0 \subseteq R\), one can consider the affine variety of all ideals \(I\) in \(R\) which have \(I_0\) as its initial ideal with respect to \(\tau\). Describing this variety is of fundamental importance to the study of the Hilbert scheme. The main result of this paper is an explicit parametrization in the case \(I_0 \subseteq R = k[x,y]\) and \(\tau\) is degree preserving. The author also extends this to the three variable case \(I_0' \subseteq k[x,y,z]\) where \(I_0' = I_0 k[x,y]\) and we take \(\tau'\) to be the degree reverse-lexicographic term ordering. A nice consequence is the proof of a formula of Iarrobino for the codimension of the Betti strata of codimension two punctual schemes in the projective plane. The author includes a helpful section devoted to examples which illustrate the proof technique. The paper is a good resource for anybody interested in the study of the Hilbert scheme of points and Gröbner cells.
