The authors study the 3D compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations. One obtains a blow up criterion for the local strong solutions just in terms of the gradient of the velocity, similar to the Beal-Kato-Majda criterion [\textit{J. T. Beal, T. Kato} and \textit{A. Majda}, Commun. Math. Phys. 94, 61--66 (1984; Zbl 0573.76029)] for the ideal incompressible flow. In addition, initial vacuum is allowed in the envisaged case.
