The purpose of this paper is to investigate the solutions of refinement equations of the form \[ \varphi(x)= \sum_{\alpha\in\mathbb{Z}^s}a(\alpha)\,\varphi(Mx-\alpha),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^s, \] where the vector of functions \(\varphi= (\varphi_1,\dots,\varphi_r)^T\) is in \((L_p(\mathbb{R}^s))^r\), \(0<p\leq\infty\); \(a(\alpha)\), \(\alpha\in \mathbb{Z}^s\) is a finitely supported sequence of \(r\times r\) matrices called the refinement mask, and \(M\) is an \(s\times s\) integer matrix such that \(\lim_{n\to\infty} M^{-n} = 0\). In this article, we characterize the existence of an \(L^p\)-solution of the refinement equation for \(0<p\leq\infty\). Our characterizations are based on the \(p\)-norm joint spectral radius.
