A Riemann boundary value problem is studied for analytic functions of several complex variables in the unit polydisc. As in \textit{V. A. Kakichev} [Transl. Ser. 2, Am. Math. Soc. 146, 33--41 (1990; Zbl 0709.30034)], where the case of two variables were investigated, the Fourier method is used. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of non trivial solutions and for the finiteness of the number of linearly independent solutions for the homogeneous system are given. The number of linearly independent solutions is also provided. Moreover, results for the inhomogeneous Riemann problem include solvability conditions and an expression for their number. In case of the degenerate problem, compare Kakichev, it is shown that the number of solvability conditions is infinite. The Riemann Hilbert boundary value problem and in particular the (Hermann Amandus) Schwarz problem is reformulated such that it is unconditionally solvable in case the partial indices are zero. Its relation with the Riemann problem is deduced. Moreover, the difference to the case of one complex variable is discussed. For another formulation and treatment see \textit{A. Mohammed} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 326, 533--555 (2007; Zbl 1110.32002)].
