The main result of this paper is Theorem 2. For all \(R\geq 1,\) and measures \(\mu\) supported on \(\mathbb S^1\), \[ \int\limits_{\mathbb S^1}|\widehat{gd\sigma}(Rx)|^2\,d\mu(x)\lesssim \frac{\log R}{R}\int\limits_{\mathbb S^1}|g(\omega)|^2M{\mathcal M^R}(\mu)(\omega)\,d\sigma(\omega), \] and \[ \int\limits_{\mathbb S^1}|\widehat{gd\sigma}(Rx)|^2\,d\mu(x)\lesssim \frac{1}{R}\int\limits_{\mathbb S^1}|g(\omega)|^2M{\mathcal M^R}M^2(\mu)(\omega)\,d\sigma(\omega), \] where \[ {\mathcal M^R}(\mu)(\omega)=\sup\limits_{T\|\omega,\atop R^{-1}\leq a\leq R^{-2/3}}\frac{\mu(T(\alpha,\alpha^2R))}{\alpha}, \] with \(T(\alpha,\beta)\) being a rectangle in the plane of short side \(\alpha\) and long side \(\beta\), and \(M\) is the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function on \(\mathbb S^1.\) This result is certain progress in Stein's conjecture on the possibility to control the Fourier extension operator via \(L^2\) weighted inequalities for directional maximal functions. In the corrigendum the displayed inequality between inequalities (32) and (33) is corrected.
