Cohomological support varieties for restricted Lie algebras are an extremely useful tool in the study of modular representations of Lie algebras, as demonstrated by \textit{A. Premet}'s solution of the Kac-Weisfeiler conjecture [Invent. Math. 121, No.1, 79--117 (1995; Zbl 0828.17008)]. In the paper under review the authors describe the support varieties of finite-dimensional modules over Lie algebras of Cartan type, whenever the height of the associated character is not too large.
