Given a nonassociative (i.e.; not necessarily associative) algebra with involution \((R,-)\) over a field \(F\), a natural number \(n\in{\mathbb N}\), and a tuple of nonzero scalars \(\gamma=(\gamma_1,\ldots,\gamma_n)\), the \textit{Steinberg unitary Lie algebra} \(\mathfrak{stu}_n(R,-,\gamma)\) is the Lie algebra with generators \(u_{ij}(r)\) for \(1\leq i\neq j\leq n\) and \(r\in R\), subject to the relations: \(r\mapsto u_{ij}(r)\) is \(F\)-linear, \([u_{ij}(r),u_{jk}(s)]=u_{ik}(rs)\) for different \(i,j,k\), \([u_{ij}(r),u_{kl}(s)]=0\) for different \(i,j,k,l\), and \(u_{ij}(r)=u_{ji}(-\gamma_i\gamma_j^{-1}\bar r)\). The Lie algebras \(\mathfrak{stu}_n(R,-,\gamma)\) appear in the study of the extended affine Lie algebras. The assignment \(\text{deg}\,u_{ij}(r)=\epsilon_i+\epsilon_j\), where \(\epsilon_i\) is the \(i^{\text{th}}\) canonical basic element in \({\mathbb Z}_2^n\), endows \(\mathfrak{stu}_n(R,-,\gamma)\) with the structure of a \({\mathbb Z}_2^n\)-graded Lie algebra, and this grading is compatible with any grading on \((R,-)\): If \(R=\bigoplus_{g\in G}R_g\) is a grading by the abelian group \(G\) with \(\bar R_g=R_g\) for any \(g\in G\), then \(\mathfrak{stu}_n(R,-,\gamma)\) is naturally \({\mathbb Z}_2^n\times G\)-graded. The paper under review is devoted to the study of the graded ideals of \(\mathfrak{stu}_n(R,-,\gamma)\) (for the \({\mathbb Z}_2^n\times G\)-grading), as well as the graded simplicity of \(\mathfrak{stu}_n(R,-,\gamma)\), in case \((R,-)\) is associative over a field \(F\) of characteristic \(0\) and \(n\geq 5\).
