As mentioned in the introduction, the authors' main result is stated as follows. For two odd unbounded Kasparov modules over \(C^*\)-algebra pairs \((A, B)\) and \((B, C)\), under an assumption that there exists a correspondence between the modules, their interior Kasparov product can be represented by an even unbounded Kasparov \(A\)-\(C\) module involving any hermitian connection. As a note, an (odd or no grading) unbounded Kasparov \(A\)-\(B\) module is a pair \((X, D)\) of a countably generated \(A\)-\(B\) Hilbert \(C^*\)-bimodule \(X\) and an unbounded self-adjoint, regular operator \(D\) on \(X\), with a dense \(\ast\)-subalgebra of \(A\), whose elements and their commutator with \(D\) extend to bounded operators, and with a resolvent condition for \(D\). A correspondence between two unbounded Kasparov moldules is a pair of an operator \(\ast\)-module over a \(\sigma\)-unital operator \(\ast\)-algebra and a completely bounded hermitian connection with several conditions such as density as a subspace and as a \(\ast\)-subalgebra, extendability to bounded operators, and a sort of resolvent condition, involving the connection. As an application, it is shown that the Dirac-Schrödinger operator with positive parameter large enough is an unbounded Fredholm operator, and furthermore, its Fredholm index coincides with the integer given by the interior Kasparov product in the KK-group of \(\mathbb C\) and \(\mathbb C\), isomorphic to \(\mathbb Z\). The Dirac-Schrödinger operator with parameter \(\lambda\) is the sum \(\lambda D_1(x) + i D_2\), associated with \(\{D_1(x)\}_{x\in M}\) a family of unbounded self-adjoint operators parametrized by a complete oriented manifold \(M\), which are weakly differentiable with uniformly bounded derivative and have their spectra bounded away from zero outside compact sets of \(M\), and with \(D_2\) a first order formally self-adjoint elliptic differential operator with bounded propagation speed, on sections involving a hermitian vector bundle over \(M\).
