Let \(A \subseteq B\) be an extension of commutative rings, \(X\) be an indeterminate, and \(\mathcal{I}(A,B)\) be the multiplicative group of all \(A\)-submodules of \(B\) which are invertible. Clearly, if \(B\) is the total quotient ring of \(A\), then \(\mathcal{I}(A,B) =\mathrm{Pic}A\), the Picard group of \(A\). In this paper under review the authors show that \(A\) is subintegrally closed in \(B\) if and only if the canonical map \(\mathcal{I}(A,B) \rightarrow \mathcal{I}(A[X], B[X])\) is an isomorphism. They also study a relationship between these two groups when \(A\) may not be subintegrally closed in \(B\). This is a generalization of the well-known fact that \(A_{\mathrm{red}}\) is seminormal if and only if the canonical map \(\mathrm{Pic}A \rightarrow\mathrm{Pic}A[X]\) is an isomorphism [\textit{R. G. Swan}, J. Algebra 67, 210--229 (1980; Zbl 0473.13001)].
