Let \(F\) be a p-adic field. Respectively denote by \(\overline{G_0(n)}\) and \(\overline{G(n)}\) the metaplectic double covers of the symplectic group \(Sp_{2n}(F)\) and the general symplectic group \(GSp_{2n}(F)\). The representation theory of \(\overline{G_0(n)}\) is better understood than that of \(\overline{G(n)}\) in the literature. In the paper under review, the author gets a series of results on genuine smooth representations of \(\overline{G(n)}\), relating to that of \(\overline{G_0(n)}\). The main results are stated as Theorems A, B, C, D and E in the paper. Denote by \(\overline{G^+(n)}\) the group of all elements in \(\overline{G(n)}\) whose similitude factor lies in \((F^\times)^2\). The set \(\mathrm{Irr}(\overline{G^+(n)})\) is easily described in terms of \(\mathrm{Irr}(\overline{G_0(n)})\), where ``\(\mathrm{Irr}\)'' indicates the set of all isomorphism classes of genuine irreducible smooth representations. Theorem A of the paper asserts that, when \(n\) is odd, there is a natural \([F^\times: (F^\times)^2]\) to one map from \(\mathrm{Irr}(\overline{G^+(n)})\) onto \(\mathrm{Irr}(\overline{G(n)})\). Theorem B relates the irreducibility of the parabolic inductions of \(\overline{G(n)}\) to that of \(\overline{G_0(n)}\). Theorem C asserts that in many cases, including all cases when \(n\) is odd, the contragredient of an element of \(\mathrm{Irr}(\overline{G(n)})\) is isomorphic to a twist of it by a character. Theorem D asserts that when \(n\) is odd, genuine unitary principal series representations of \(\overline{G(n)}\) are irreducible. In Theorem E, the author gets a uniqueness and existence result for Whittaker models of certain smooth representations of \(\overline{G(n)}\).
