Let \(R\) be the ring of integers in the algebraic number field \(F\), \(G\) a finite group and \(RG\) its group ring. In the group algebra \(FG\) every unit is the product of a semisimple unit and a commuting unipotent unit, \(RG\) has the multiplicative Jordan decomposition property (MJD for short) if the semisimple unit and commuting unipotent unit factors of every unit remain in the integral group ring. It is known that if \(RG\) has MJD then simple components of \(FG\) have degrees 1, 2 or 3 and the product of a nilpotent element of \(RG\) and a central idempotent of \(FG\) should remain in \(RG\). The main result of the paper is that if there is a simple component \(M_3(D)\) for some \(F\)-division algebra of \(FG\) then projections to \(M_3(D)\) of central units in \(RG\) have finite multiplicative orders. Based on this result, the authors simplify their proof of determining MJD 3-groups \(G\) [expounded in J. Algebra Appl. 8, No. 4, 505-519 (2009; Zbl 1185.20002) and ibid. 9, No. 3, 483-492 (2010; Zbl 1205.16019)], and establish that for only Abelian 3-groups \(G\) \(RG\) has MJD provided \(R\neq\mathbb Z\). Also, they consider the semidirect products \(C_p\rtimes C_{3k}\), where \(C_p\) is cyclic of prime order \(p\), \(C_{3k}=\langle g\rangle\) and \(g^3\) acts trivially on \(C_p\), towards a complete classification of all non-Abelian MJD groups.
