Digital images consist of many visual patterns which can be seen as sets of non-abstract points endowed with some form of proximity relation. Such relations allow the construction of uniform topologies on sets of points defining an digital image. This book summarizes the recent work in the field of proximity spaces and introduces a near set-based topology of images. Besides the commonly used spatial proximity relations, the book treats also recent descriptive proximity relations. Since digital images are a source of these patterns, this book treats basics of digital images from a computer vision perspective as well. This book consists of twelve chapters. Through these chapters, the following topics are presented: basics of color digital images, basic operations on images, histograms, linear filtering, edge detection, corner detection, morphological segmentation, descriptive raster spaces, component analysis, shapes, textures, and image classification. Each chapter presents basics of the given topic followed by the appropriate topological approach. In the appendix, all Matlab and Mathematica codes used in the book are listed. This book presents recent research results of visual patterns in proximity spaces in a very easy to follow way. The book is full of color images, examples, Matlab and Mathematica codes, and exercises. It can be treated twofold -- as a research exposition for mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, and for all who want to familiarize with the recent research in this field. It can also be treated as a textbook for students and for all who want to deeply understand images through their topology. It can be used for self studying and as a course book as well.
