A subset \(K\) of a Banach space \(X\) is relatively compact if and only if there exists a norm null sequence \((x_n) \in c_0(X)\) such that \[ K \subset\left\{ \sum_n a_n x_n : (a_n) \in B_{\ell_1}\right\}. \] A Banach space \(X\) has the approximation property if the identity operator \(I_X\) can be approximated by finite rank operators uniformly on compact subsets of \(X\). There are at least two ways to generalize the approximation property. We can approximate \(I_X\) on different subsets and/or we can approximate with other sets of operators. A subset \(K\) of \(X\) is relatively \(p\)-compact, \(1 \leq p < \infty\), if there exists an absolutely \(p\)-summable sequence \((x_n) \in \ell_p(X)\) such that \[ K \subset\left\{\sum_n a_n x_n : (a_n) \in B_{\ell_{q}}\right\}, \] where \(1/p + 1/q = 1\). If \(I_X\) can be approximated uniformly by finite rank operators on \(p\)-compact subsets of \(X\), we get the \(p\)-approximation property of \textit{D. P. Sinha} and \textit{A. K. Karn} [Stud. Math. 150, No. 1, 17--33 (2002; Zbl 1008.46008)]. In the present paper, the authors similarly define \(\lambda\)-compact subsets of \(X\) by using more general sequence spaces \(\lambda\). In the other direction, if for example \(I_X\) can be approximated by compact operators uniformly on compact subsets of \(X\), then \(X\) has the compact approximation property. Several other variants of the approximation property have also been studied. The generalized approximation property introduced by the authors is the following: For a convex subset \(L_s(X)\) of the bounded operators on \(X\) and certain sequence spaces \(\lambda\), \(X\) has the \(L\)-subset \(\lambda\)-approximation property if \(I_X\) can be approximated by elements of \(L_s(X)\) uniformly on \(\lambda\)-compact subsets of \(X\). Characterizations of these properties are shown using the corresponding operator ideals of \(\lambda\)-compact, \(\lambda\)-nuclear, and quasi-\(\lambda\)-nuclear operators.
