The author uses the combinatorial language of bipartite graphs to describe idempotent Schur multipliers. The norms of the idempotent Schur multipliers corresponding to simple paths are of special interest. If \(D\) is a masa in \(B(H)\), where \(H\) is a separable Hilbert space, then he finds real numbers \(\eta_0<\eta_1<\cdots<\eta_6\) so that, for every bounded normal \(D\)-bimodule map \(\Phi\) on \(B(H)\), either \(\|\Phi\|>\eta_6\) or \(\|\Phi\|=\eta_k\) for some \(0\leq k\leq 6\). He then characterizes the Schur idempotents with norm \(\eta_k\) for \(0\leq k \leq 6\), see \textit{A. Katavolos} and \textit{V. I. Paulsen} [Can. Math. Bull. 48, No. 1, 97--111 (2005; Zbl 1085.46039)]. Finally, he estimates the average Schur norm of a random Schur idempotent, in which each entry is chosen independently to be \(1\) with probability \(p\) and \(0\) with probability \(1-p\).
