The authors studies restrictions of Borcherds products for orthogonal Shimura varieties to unitary ones. As his main application, he deduces automorphy of the generating function of Heegner cycles on unitary Shimura varieties of signature \((1,m)\), \(m \geq 1\). \textit{Liu}, as mentioned in the paper, independently obtained a similar result by different methods [Algebra Number Theory 5, No. 7, 849-921 (2011; Zbl 1258.11060)]. Let \(V_{\mathbb{F}}\) be a hermitian vector space of signature \((1,m)\) over a imaginary quadratic number field \(\mathbb{F}\). When forgetting the complex structure, one obtains a quadratic space \(V_{\mathbb{Q}}\) of signature \((2, 2m)\). This, in particular, yields an inclusion of isometry groups \(\mathrm{U}(V_{\mathbb{F}}) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{O}(V_{\mathbb{Q}})\) and attached homogeneous spaces \[ X_{\mathrm{U}} = \mathrm{U}(V_{\mathbb{F}}) / \big(\mathrm{U}(1) \times \mathrm{U}(m)\big) \hookrightarrow X_{\mathrm{O}} = \mathrm{O}(V_{\mathbb{Q}}) / \big(\mathrm{O}(2) \times \mathrm{O}(2m)\big) . \] Based on this inclusion, the author pulls back Borcherds's construction of automorphic products on \(X_{\mathrm{O}}\). The crux of the paper is to choose normalizations correctly, such that holomorphic structures are preserved and formulas work out as desired.
