The aim of these lecture notes is to present the theory of free arrangements and its connections to algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Free arrangements are motivated by the theory of free divisors introduced by \textit{K. Saito} [J. Fac. Sci., Univ. Tokyo, Sect. I A 27, 265--291 (1980; Zbl 0496.32007)]. The first chapter is devoted to give the basics and to discuss techniques to prove freeness. For instance, it is noted that freeness is connected to the splitting problem: freeness is equivalent to splitting of a reflexive sheaf on the projective space into sum of line bundles. The second chapter is devoted to the theory of derivations for Coxeter arrangements. The third chapter describes truncated affine Weyl arrangements. Applications of this machinery include the proof that Catalan and extended Shi arrangements are free.
