This paper deals with pointwise estimates of the first difference of a function in a variable exponent Sobolev space. If \(\inf p\) is larger than the dimension, then the result (Corollary~4.6) tells us that \[ \sup_{x,h} \frac{| u(x+h)-u(x)| }{| h| ^{1-n/p(x)}} \leq C\, \| \nabla u\| _{L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)} \] for a bounded Lipschitz domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n\), a \(\log\)-Hölder continuous exponent, and a Sobolev function \(u\in W^{1,p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\). The same result has been obtained by \textit{D. E. Edmunds} and \textit{J. Rákosník} [Stud. Math. 143, No. 3, 267--293 (2000; Zbl 0974.46040)] using a more complicated technique. The present paper also includes a Sobolev inequality for the Riesz fractional derivative, based on the pointwise estimates.
