Let \(A \in M_{m \times n}\) and \(B \in M_{p\times q}\), where \(M_{s\times t}\) denotes the set of \(s\times t\) real matrices. The objective of this paper is to define a product of matrices \(A\) and \(B\) when \(n \neq p\) and to exploit some of its properties. This product is called ``semitensor product'' and is defined when either \(n\) is a factor of \(p\) or \(p\) is a factor of \(n\). Some structure-related properties of algebras are discussed in terms of this product, with particular attention to Lie algebras. According to the author, one of the motivations for introducing this product comes from Computer Science, where it is expected to deal easily with storage data.
