Singular fibers in elliptic fibrations on the rational elliptic surface (Q2460688)

The authors investigate continuous maps \(f\) from a rational elliptic surface \(\mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \sharp {\overline {\mathbb C\mathbb P^2}}\) to the 2-dimensional sphere \(S^2\). Under the assumption that \(f\) is locally (on the base) holomorphic and that all the fibers of \(f\) except finitely many are 2-dimensional tori, they determine the possible combinations of singular fibers such a mapping can admit. Some of these combinations cannot be realized by global holomorphic maps \(\mathbb C\mathbb P^2 \sharp {\overline {\mathbb C\mathbb P^2}} \to \mathbb C\mathbb P^1\).
