Complicated matrix factorizations apparently arise in the link homology theories introduced by \textit{M. Khovanov} and \textit{L. Rozansky} in [Fundam. Math. 199, 1--91 (2008; Zbl 1145.57009); part II: arXiv:math.QA/0505056]. Difficulties utilizing such factorizations are alleviated by the author's geometric approach. He constructs a categorification (a canopolis) of the planar algebra of \textit{D. Bar-Natan} [Geom. Topol. 9, 1443--1499 (2005; Zbl 1084.57011)]. He gives new proofs and analyses of results on triply graded homology.
