The paper deals with the functional equation \[ (n)\;f(x+f(x)^n y)=\lambda f(x)f(y), \] where \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), \(0\neq\lambda\in K,\) a field of real or complex numbers, \(X\) is a vector space over \(K,\) and \(f:X\to K\) is such that the set \(\{x\in K\mid f(x)\neq0\}\) has an algebraically interior point. (For a survey on this kind of equations see \textit{J. Brzdék} [Aequationes Math. 70, 14--24 (2005; Zbl 1078.39021)].) The author offers first the surprising result that, for a rather wide class of functions, eq. (1) is equivalent to the statement: ``\(f(x+f(x)y)=0\) iff \(f(x)f(y)=0\)''. The main result is a rather involved stability theorem for \((n)\).
