The authors investigate the properties of Riesz bases of wavelets generated by a multiresolution analysis. More specifically, they study refinement equations such that their masks are exponentially decaying sequences. In order to study such equations, they introduce the cascade operator and the transition operator. It turns out that the transition operator associated with an exponentially decaying mask is a compact operator on a certain Banach space of sequences. Using the spectral theory of compact operators, the authors are able to characterize the convergence of the cascade algorithm associated with an exponentially decaying mask in terms of the spectrum of the corresponding transition operator. As an application of this characterization they prove their main result, namely that an affine wavelet associated with a multiresolution analysis that satisfies certain additional conditions is a Riesz basis of \(L^2(\mathbb R)\), if and only if the cascade algorithm associated with its mask is convergent in \(L^2(\mathbb R)\).
