If denotes the unit ball in \(\mathbb{C}^n\), the Bergman space \(L^2_a(\mathbb{B}_n)\) is formed by the analytic functions in \(L^2(\mathbb{B}_n, dA)\), where \(dA\) is the normalized Lebesgue measure. This paper shows that there is a positive function \(\varphi\in L^2(\mathbb{B}_n,dA)\) that is unbounded on any neighbourhood of any point of \(\partial\mathbb{B}_n\), and such that the Toeplitz operator \(T_\varphi\) is of trace class. The construction of \(\varphi\) goes like this. Take a dense sequence \(\xi_j\in\partial\mathbb{B}_n\) and for each \(j\), let \(\varphi_j\) be the characteristic function of a cone-like region \(\Omega(\xi_j)\) associated to \(\xi_j\), weighted by a \(-c\) power of the distance to \(\partial\mathbb{B}_n\), where \(c\) is a positive number. Then \(\varphi_j\) is not bounded in any neighbourhood of \(\xi_j\), and it is shown here that if the measure of \(\Omega(\xi_j)\) is small enough when compared with \(c\), then \(T_{\varphi_j}\) is a trace class operator with trace norm bounded independently of \(j\), and the same holds for the \(L^2\) norm of \(\varphi_j\). Consequently, the Toeplitz operator with symbol \(\varphi:= \sum^\infty_{j=1} {1\over 2^j}\varphi_j\) satisfies the claim.
