The Weierstraß formula describes a conformal minimal immersion of a Riemann surface \(M^2\) into the \(3\)-dimensional Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^3\). In this formula the immersion is encoded in terms of a holomorphic function and a holomorphic \(1\)-form. Equivalently, the immersion can be characterized using a spinor field \(\Psi\) on \(M^2\) satisfying the Dirac equation \(D\Psi=0\). The work of Eisenhardt in 1909 indicated that there exists a similar description for arbitrary surfaces \(M^2\hookrightarrow\mathbb{R}^3\). Such surfaces are represented by a spinor field \(\Psi\) on \(M^2\) that satisfies \(D\Psi=H\Psi\), where \(H\) is the mean curvature of \(M^2\). In his framework of submanifold quantum mechanics, the author investigates the above question for an arbitrary immersion \(S\hookrightarrow M\) of spin manifolds. He defines an operator of Dirac type on \(S\) and studies its kernel in relation to the immersed geometry. Using Frobenius reciprocity he obtains that the immersion can be reconstructed locally.
