The authors deal with singular Sturm-Liouville problems having absolutely continuous spectrum in \([0,\infty ).\) They extend and generalize a characterization of the spectral density function due to Weyl and Titchmarsh. A new family of approximants to the spectral density function is derived by a recurrent approach and theoretical results about convergence are established. This method turns out to be particularly suitable for the case of power potentials. Several numerical examples are presented which show the rates of convergence of the numerical approximants to be in accord with the expected theoretical rates.
