The authors start with the interpretation of the Landau-Lifshitz equation [\textit{L. Landau} and \textit{E. Lifshitz}, Phys. Z. Sowjetunion 8, 153--169 (1935; Zbl 0012.28501)]. Based on this interpretation they develop a extended Landau-Lifshitz equation for a thin ferromagnetic film model using a asymptotic regime derived in [\textit{A. Desimone, R. V. Kohn, S. Müller} and \textit{F. Otto}, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 55, No. 11, 1008--1460 (2002; Zbl 1027.82042)] but, now the reduced theory is applied to the dynamical equation. Then the Cauchy problem of the corresponding linear equation is considered and proven to be well-posed in \(L^2\). Finally the existence of a weak solution of the dynamical Landau-Lifshitz equation in thin films is proven using a penalty approximation and compactness theorem.
