The authors study the Cauchy problem of the following higher-order dispersive equation in \(\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{R}:\) \[ iu_t+\triangle{u}+au_{x_1x_1x_1x_1}+bu_{x_1x_1x_1x_1x_1x_1}+| u| ^{\alpha}u=0. \] By Kato's method, some local existence results for initial data belonging to \(H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)\) are found. Several of the proofs use the Hölder-Rogers inequality [\textit{L. J. Rogers}, ``An extension of a certain theorem in inequalities'', Mess. (2) XVII, 145--150 (1887; JFM 20.0254.02)]. Reviewer's remark: The Hölder-Rogers inequality is usually called the Hölder inequality. After a talk on \(q\)-calculus by the reviewer at Luleå 2002, Lech Maligranda started to write about the Rogers contribution to the Hölder inequality. Finally, both the Rogers-Ramanujan identities and the Hölder-Rogers inequality are mentioned in the Lech Maligranda Internet biography about L. J. Rogers.
