The authors study transformations that leave invariant the symmetry algebra of the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FN) equation modeling nerve-impulse propagation; these are affine transformations of the independent variables. Application of such a transformation leads to what the authors call a generalised FN equation. It is proposed that such equations may be used to model changes in the material through which the impulse propagates. Finally, the numerical integration of the generalised FN equation via the method of lines is discussed.
