Given an analytic self map \(\varphi\) on the open unit disk \(\mathbb D\) of the complex plane \(\mathbb C\), the \textit{composition operator} \(C_\varphi\) on \(H(\mathbb D)\) is defined by \(C_\varphi (f)=f \circ \varphi\). Let \(v:\mathbb D\to\mathbb R\) be a \textit{weight}, that is, a radial bounded continuous strictly positive function, and consider the weighted Banach spaces \(H^\infty_v=\{f\in H(\mathbb D):\| f\| _v:=\sup_{| z|<1} v(z)| f(z)|<\infty\}\) and \(H^0_v=\{f\in H^\infty_v:\lim_{z \to 1}v(z)| f(z)|=0\}\), endowed with the norm \(\|\cdot\|_v\). A weight \(v\) is called \textit{typical} if it is non-increasing with respect to \(| z| \) and \(\lim_{z \to 1}v(z)=0\). If \(\varphi(0)=0\), then it is known that \(C_\varphi\) is bounded on \(H^\infty_v\) and \(H^0_v\). If, in addition, \(0<|\varphi'(z)|<1\), then there is a unique nonconstant function \(\sigma\in H(\mathbb D)\), called the \textit{Koenigs function} for \(\varphi\), such that \(\sigma\circ\varphi=\varphi'(0)\sigma\). In the paper under review, the authors determine the spectra of \(C_\varphi\) on \(H^\infty_v\), \(H^0_v\). They also investigate in this case the growth rate of the Koenigs eigenfunction and its relation with the essential spectral radius of \(C_\varphi\). This completes or improves several results by Aron, Lindström, Kamowitz, Cowen, MacCluer, Saxe, Poggi--Corradini, Zheng and Bourdon, among others. Recall that, if \(T\) is an operator on a Banach space \(X\), then the \textit{essential spectrum} \(\sigma_{e,X}(T)\) is the set of all \(\lambda\in\mathbb C\) such that \(T-\lambda I\) is not Fredholm, while the \textit{essential spectral radius} is \(r_{e,X}(T):=\sup\{|\lambda|:\lambda\in\sigma_{e,X}(T)\}\). By \(\sigma_{X}(T)\) we denote the (usual) spectrum of \(T\). Specifically, the authors obtain the following results: (a) If \(v\) is a typical weight, \(\varphi (0) = 0\) and \(\varphi\) is not an automorphism, then \(\sigma_{e,X}(C_\varphi)=\{\lambda \in\mathbb C:| \lambda|\leq r_{e,X}(C_\varphi )\} \cup \{\varphi '(0)^n:n \geq 0\}\), for \(X=H^\infty_v\), \(H^0_v\). (b) Assume that \(n \in\mathbb N\), \(v\) is a typical weight, \(\varphi(0)=0\) and \(0<|\varphi'(0)|<1\). If \(|\varphi'(0)|^n>r_{e,H^\infty_v}(C_\varphi)=r_{e,H^0_v}(C_\varphi )\), then the Koenigs eigenfunction \(\sigma^n\) belongs to \(H^0_v\) with eigenvalue \(\varphi '(0)^n\). (c) Let \(\varphi (0) = 0\) and \(0<|\varphi'(0)|<1\). Then \(\sigma\in H^\infty\) (the class of bounded holomorphic functions on \(\mathbb D\)) if and only if \(r_{e,H^\infty_v}(C_\varphi)=0\). A partial converse of (b) is also provided.
