This paper deals with the second order evolution equation \[ p(t)u''(t)+r(t) u'(t) \in A(t), ~ t \in (0,\infty ), ~ u(0)=u_0, \] where \(u(t)\) belongs to the Hilbert space \(H\), \(A\) is a maximal monotone operator acting on \(H\) with \(A^{-1}(0)\neq \emptyset\), \(p\) and \(r\) are real-valued functions. Véron found conditions which guarantee the existence and uniqueness of solutions of this problem. Assuming additionally that \(A\) is a subdifferential of a proper convex and lower semicontinuous function from \(H\) into \((-\infty , \infty ]\), the authors prove the mean ergodic theorem. Moreover, if \(r\) is bounded from below by \(-Mt^{-2 }\) or \(A\) is strongly monotone it is also proved that \[ \lim_{t \to \infty }u(t)=p \in A^{-1 }(0). \]
