The author introduces the following version of the approximation property (AP): A Banach space \(X\) has the strong AP if for every separable reflexive Banach space \(Z\) and for every compact operator \(T: X\to Z\) there exists a bounded net of finite-rank operators \(T_\alpha: X\to Z\) such that \(T_\alpha x \to Tx\) for all \(x\in X\). This condition is suggested by results from [\textit{Å.~Lima} and \textit{E.~Oja}, Mich.\ Math.\ J. 52, No. 2, 253--265 (2004; Zbl 1069.46013) and \textit{E.~Oja} and \textit{A.~Pelander}, J. Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 286, No. 2, 713--723 (2003; Zbl 1060.47023)]. She proves the following results. If \(X^*\) has the AP, then \(X\) has the strong AP, and if \(X\) has the strong AP, then \(X\) has the AP. Neither of these implications can be reversed. However, if \(X\) is complemented in its bidual and \(X\) has the AP, then \(X\) has the strong AP. She also investigates relations with the bounded AP and the weak AP and conjectures that the strong AP does not imply the bounded AP.
